What to Include in a Small Business Website Redesign Brief

· ZippyGlow Editorial

Website Planning
Write a better website brief — original explanatory artwork

A useful website redesign brief tells your designer what the business does, what visitors need to do, which existing pages matter, and what must be ready before launch. Start with those decisions before choosing colors or requesting a new homepage.

Write the goal as a visitor action

Choose a concrete next step: request a quote, call about a service, or book an appointment. Then explain what a visitor needs to know before taking it. “We need a modern website” leaves more decisions open than “People should be able to check our service area and request a cleaning quote from a phone.” That is a planning example, not a promised result.

Make a page-and-content list

List each proposed page, its purpose, and who will supply the copy and images. ZippyGlow’s website-design service describes up to five custom-designed pages with copy tailored to the business. Home, Services, About, Service Area and Contact are one possible arrangement, rather than a required template.

For an existing site, include a list of useful URLs to preserve and pages that need discussion. Flag out-of-date service descriptions and contact details. Give the designer the information needed to assess them before deciding what to change.

Use this copyable brief

  • Business and audience: What do you offer, and who needs it?
  • Main action: What should a visitor do next?
  • Pages: What question should each page answer?
  • Existing content: Which URLs, copy and images should be reviewed?
  • Assets: Who owns the logo, photographs and text, and are they approved for use?
  • Access: Who controls the domain and hosting? Agree a secure access method with the designer; keep passwords out of the brief.
  • Launch constraints: Is there a real deadline, and who can give feedback?

A small example

For a hypothetical cleaning business: “We serve homes and small offices. The main action is a quote request. We need separate explanations of residential and commercial work, our actual service area, and an easy contact route. We will provide approved photographs and confirm the service details before launch.” Adapt the example to your business rather than copying its services or geography.

Bring your draft brief to a website-design conversation with ZippyGlow. Confirm the scope, responsibilities and review process before work begins.

Start your website brief with the action visitors should take next. Name the pages you need, and the question each should answer. List useful existing links, so your designer can review what matters. Record who will provide approved text, photographs, and feedback before launch. Agree secure account access separately. Keep passwords out of the brief. Bring that short checklist to your website design conversation with ZippyGlow.
